The Crippler is a Cocktail Worthy of Its Name

The Crippler: World’s best cocktail that sounds like a wrestler’s name.

Cocktails We Love was originally intended to spotlight Chicago cocktails, but we got busy making drinks at home instead of hitting the town. Now it’s time to finally get out and see the world. First up? Tippling Hall.

I first stopped into Tippling Hall to check out their unique draft cocktails, like the Deep Dish Manhattan, but it was another menu item that caught my eye. I was in a mood to get particularly unsober, we’ve all had those, and there it was staring at me. A cocktail called The Crippler. Without even looking at the spec my decision was passed onto the server.

A minute later it dawned on me that I had no clue what I ordered. It could have been a shot of malört and a baseball bat to the knee for all I knew. Thankfully upon re-opening the menu it was clear that no wooden sticks were involved in the cocktail. Just booze and lots of it.

Here are the ingredients:

  • Bonded Rye Whiskey
  • Mezcal
  • J.M. Overproof Rhum
  • Stroh Jagertee
  • Yellow Chartreuse
  • Memphis BBQ Bitters

For those keeping score at home, that’s booze, booze, booze, booze, booze, and bitters… which is also booze. It’s is cocktail comprised entirely of alcohol. If The Crippler isn’t the perfect drink, I don’t know what is.

The beauty of The Crippler is that tastes delicious! I don’t know how or why, but it is. I’ve ordered it every single time I’ve gone to Tippling Hall, which is more than I can count and not just because I’m bad at counting. The combination of delicious and uber-intoxicating reminds me of the legend known as The Bill Brasky at Bottlefork, and that’s great company in which to be.

Go give it a shot, then follow it up with the triple fister known as the Blarney Miller. Have I mentioned yet how much I love Tippling Hall?

Cocktails We Love is a new column on Boozist highlighting the best cocktails in Chicago as well as ones you can make in your own kitchen. Have a suggestion? Send it our way!
