Don’t sleep on this tequila-fueled Siesta cocktail recipe

Siesta CocktailDia de los Muertos cocktails can be a bit tricky. Similarities to the Halloween we know and love are clear, but it’s so much more. It’s not one night of costumes and candy. It’s three days of celebrating the lives of the dead. And when I’m down for my eternal Siesta, I want people drinking something delicious rather than something spooky.

I’ll admit to overthinking things when searching for this cocktail. Dia de los Muertos is a full blown public holiday in Mexico, so tequila was a no brainer. Given that it’s a celebration of the lives of those now dead, I wanted something fresh and bright – fresh grapefruit juice. Death, though, however we want to spin it, is a bitter pill to swallow – Campari.

All that added up to… well, I had no idea. So I popped over to Cocktail Builder and plugged in tequila, Campari, and grapefruit juice. Turns out I was just a couple things short of a Siesta Cocktail. Not only did the ingredients line up perfectly with this absurd concept I had in my head, the damn cocktails name means “nap!”

The Siesta:

  • 2 oz. blanco tequila (Altos Tequila)
  • 1/2 oz. Campari
  • 1/2 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz. fresh grapefruit juice
  • 1/2 oz. simple syrup
  • Grapefruit twist, for garnish

Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until will chilled. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with the grapefruit twist or lime wheel. Pour a little out for your homie. Drink.
